Private ClientMany people work and save hard during their lifetime to maximise the funds they have available on retirement. They want to be able to give money or other assets to their families before and after their death: the wish to benefit loved ones is natural.
These days, however, with comparative decreases in tax thresholds and increases in property values, there are fears that beneficiaries will have to pay significant amounts of tax following the death of relatives.
In addition, changes in family structure, but not in inheritance law, may mean that the assets passed on after death (the estate), may benefit someone that the deceased did not want to, such as a previous wife. There are also claims that can be made against an estate by someone who was maintained by the deceased and, occasionally, disputes arise over the legitimacy of a Will or the administration of an estate.
Our specialist Wills and probate lawyers are well-aware that these are sensitive issues. Whilst sympathetic and diplomatic, our experienced team gives honest and straight-forward advice. That advice might relate to tax planning; making a Will or establishing a Power of Attorney; administering an estate (we are happy to be appointed as Executors for this purpose); or advising in relation to the setting up and administration of a trust.
