Paul trained with Woolsey Morris & Kennedy, qualified as a solicitor in 1968 and became a partner in 1970. He served as the local constituency member (Croydon & North West Kent) on the Council of the Law Society of England and Wales (the solicitors' governing body) from 1989 to 2003. He has been a Notary Public since 1975.
